Rain is a symbol of fertility, but where it only occurs every few years, it can sometimes do more harm than good.

Once every 10 years…

The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the driest regions in the world. Located in the rain shadow of the Andes, it receives an average annual rainfall of barely more than 0.5 mm. Heavy downpours occur only about every six to ten years, causing flooding and landslides along the entire coast. In 2017, the regions of Chañaral, Huasco, Vallenar, and Copiapó were particularly hard hit. Hundreds of houses were engulfed by mudslides or buried underground. Countless people were left with the ruins of their lives.
