Turkey/Syria Earthquake Appeal

Wednesday  10th May 2023

In February we launched an appeal for £150,000 to cover the cost of 1,000 Water Survival Boxes to go to survivors of the earthquake that devastated the border area in south-west Turkey and north-east Syria. The response has already enabled us to send a total of 400 boxes and our aim is to get a further 600 boxes on their way in the coming weeks. The photograph shows just one  example of how we are supported within our local community. Thanks go to the Chew Lake Probus Club on this occasion but also to everyone who has helped us to raise the necessary funds.  Founder Chairman of Rotary charity Water Survival Box Ltd, Hugo Pike, received a cheque from Roger Metcalfe (President of the Chew Lake Probus Club) following a presentation to members at the Chew Kitchen restaurant.

Our second consignment of 200 Water Survival Boxes destined for Turkey was collected from our depot yesterday. These boxes are being taken to Antakya (formerly Antioch) in the Hatay Province for distribution by members of the International Medical Corps. So far a total of 400 boxes have been sent representing essential survival aid for at least 2000 people.

Water Survival Box managed by Chelwood Bridge Rotary is already in touch with the Turkish and Syrian in-country teams of the International Medical Corps (a regular international NGO partner). The need for clean water solutions has already been established and the WSB trustees aim to provide at least 1,000 of their standard WSBs in the coming weeks. Each box is designed to provide essential survival items for a family of five and, most importantly, the means of converting contaminated water into safe drinking water. The Grifaid Family Filter can deliver 200,000 litres of safe water – sufficient for each family member to have 20 litres each day for five years. The cost of each box is just £150 and can mean the difference between life and death through drinking contaminated water.

We have now launched an urgent appeal for donations – with the initial target of £150,000 (1000 boxes). Donations, which can be gift-aided should be made online through our website www.watersurvivalbox.org or by cheque made out to Water Survival Box Limited and sent to our registered address: Broadway House, Third Avenue, Westfield Industrial Estate, Midsomer Norton BA3 4XD
